Map Features

This page explains the function of the map tools that you will use to create maps.

A. North Slider: The North slider is used to interact with the principal data only (see also Using Maps).

About Sliders

There are 3 sliders in Dynamic Choropleth Maps: The North slider (which is used to interact with the principal map data) and the East and South sliders (which interact with secondary data to filter the principal data. See also D. East and C. South slider).

Sliders have four (4) percentiles above and three (3) percentages below. Slider end-points are used to control data percentages, while the percentiles are calculated automatically.

The North slider can be moved like a scroll bar by clicking on the yellow section and holding down the mouse button and dragging left or right. This will keep the yellow section the same size and resize the cyan and red sections. In addition, you can resize the yellow section by placing the mouse over one end, holding down the mouse button and dragging the dividing point left or right. Move the mouse over the a percentile to see the associated map area, which will turn white (see also H. Rollovers). The extreme values of data can be shown by moving the lower end-point of the cyan band to the left. For example, to isolate the 10% of counties with the highest data values, move the lower end-point of the red band to the right until the percentage is 10%. The three color bands (cyan, yellow and red) can be reduced to two, or one, by merging the slider end-points.

B. Data Selection Box

The data selection box contains all selectable data topics (see also F. Select Data). To select data, click on a topic in the data selection box and click one of the three map titles to drop the data into the map (see also C. Map Titles). Note: Dynamic Choropleth Maps software uses both county and health service area as geographic mapping units. Other units such as Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCS) could be applied as well (see also About DC Maps Software).

C.
Map Titles
There are three map titles. They are located in the North, East and South positions, on the inside of the North, East and South sliders, just above the map display area. Map titles represent the principal and secondary data that have been dropped into the map (see also Using Maps). The default map titles are North: Long Cancer Mortality, 1997 (rate per 100,000); East: Percent Below Poverty Level; South: Percent Black 1997. To drop data into the map title, click on the topic in the data selection box. Click one of the three map titles to drop the data into the map (see also B. Data Selection).

D. East Slider (and South)

The East and South sliders filter the principal data (see also Using Maps). Check the East/and or South slider checkbox (see also L. Slider Activation) to activate the slider. Scroll the end-points to filter the principal data. When the check box next to the slider is checked, the filter is active. When the slider activation check box is unchecked, the filter has no effect. Note: The South and East sliders can be used simultaneously, or one at a time, using the check boxes

E. History Arrows

You can recall maps by clicking the left and right history arrows.
This function is similar to the browser history feature. Each rendered map is stored in the history and can be recalled by using the left and right history arrows.
