TRI to Earth

Use Google Earth to learn where toxic chemicals are being released in your community. TRI to Earth is an effort to add environmental information on toxic chemicals to Google Earth satellite maps. Now facilities that are required to report releases of toxic chemicals to EPA's Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) can be identified as buildings in high resolution satellite photos instead of just nondescript points on a map. The public can use TRI to Earth to see TRI facilities in their neighborhood and get detailed reports on what toxic chemicals are being released and how much. Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic (and environmental) information at your fingertips. Fly from space to your neighborhood. Type in an address and zoom right in. Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Get driving directions. Tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings.

Google Earth will then do a dynamic pan & zoom to that state before displaying the placemarks. You can then mouse over a facility placemark icon to identify the facility as well as click on the icon to display facility specific information. The link to "More Information" connects to the EPA TRI Explorer for a facility profile.

3D Views
Arizona Each facility icon is shown at a height above sea level that is proportional to the total pounds of toxic chemical releases that it reported to EPA.
Environmental Justice In California a 1-mile buffer is drawn about each TRI facility that is eligible for burden reduction. Each 1-mile buffer is projected onto a cylinder with height proportional to the percent of the 1-mile population that is below the poverty level. The color of the cylinder is indicated by the Percent Minority of the 1-mile population. This type of presentation can be used to visualize Environmental Justice issues near TRI facilities.
United States This 3D map shows pounds of total TRI chemicals released in the U.S. in 2006 aggregated to a 1/2 degree grid. The height of the grid cell column is proportional to the total pounds released by all TRI facilities located within the grid cell. The grid cell placemarks are listed in order of highest to lowest releases in pounds. Only those cells with 1 million or more pounds are shown.
United States Each state boundary is elevated to a height above sea level that is proportional to the total pounds of toxic chemical releases reported in that state to EPA.
